Diagnosis of the level of knowledge about coffee cultivation in mountainous areas of southwest Granma
Main Article Content
Abstract
Coffee cultivation in the mountainous areas of Granma is key to the socioeconomic development of rural communities, but the variability in agricultural knowledge limits its productivity. This study aimed to assess the level of knowledge about coffee cultivation among producers in three municipalities in southwestern Granma (Pilón, Media Luna, and Campechuela) to identify training needs. A 10-item questionnaire was administered to 39 participants (farmers, technicians, and officials), evaluating aspects such as propagation, regulations, and agronomic management. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Cronbach's alpha (α = 0.701) and factor analysis (KMO = 0.629), which identified three components explaining 65.5% of the variance. The results showed acceptable knowledge of agricultural practices (Component 1), but limited knowledge of regulations and development programs (Components 2 and 3), especially in Media Luna. It is concluded that, although the instrument was reliable, training in regulations and planning needs to be strengthened, with emphasis on areas with lower performance.
