Establishment and management of coffee plantations in flat, low-altitude areas
Main Article Content
Abstract
The project entitled "Establishment and management of coffee plantations in low-altitude flat areas" with code PS 131LH 005-002 belonging to the Agro-Forestry Sector Program began its implementation in 2022 and will culminate in 2027 in six provinces and nine municipalities. Its focus is directed at nine model farms that will serve as a reference and generate a multiplier effect among producers in low-altitude flat areas. The project design is aligned with the general and specific objectives of the Agro-Forestry Sector Program, the Coffee Development Program for low-altitude flat areas (2016-2030) and Law 148 of 2022 on food sovereignty and security. In addition, it seeks to close knowledge gaps in coffee production in these regions. To achieve these objectives, elite clones of Coffea canephora and highly productive varieties of Coffea arabica have been used, with genes that confer resistance to coffee rust (Hemileia vastatrix Berk.). The main pests and diseases that affect the crop in these conditions have been identified, and work is being done on the reuse of local organic waste under a circular economy approach. Likewise, sustainable technologies have been defined for the production of seedlings, as well as for the establishment and management of coffee plantations. For the first time in these conditions, the optimal irrigation regime and standard have been determined, evaluating their impact on production, agricultural and industrial performance and coffee quality. In addition, work is being done on the implementation of agroforestry systems and associated crops to diversify income and generate new jobs. This approach prioritizes the inclusion of women and young people in productive activities. Finally, through training aimed at managers, technicians, workers and residents, the adoption of new technologies is promoted, guaranteeing the relevance and sustainability of the project.
