Abstract

Black or brown pod rot causes around 30% of global losses in cocoa production. This disease is caused by many species of the genus Phytophthora. The most devastating, P. megakarya, is found endemically in West Africa; but other species such as P. palmivora, P. citrophthora and P. capsici also cause severe damage in Latin America and the Caribbean (Vos et al., 2003; Cilas and Despreaux, 2004; Nyasse et al., 2007 and Mc Mahon and al., 2004).
